At least seven people including six of a family were killed and nine others injured in a road accident at Patiya upazila headquarters on Chittagong-Cox's Bazar Highway early Friday.
The victims were returning to Goirala village of Patiya in a microbus after attending a pre-marriage programme at Kala Ujan under Lohagar upazila.
The marriage ceremony scheduled for Friday has been cancelled due to the accident that left six relatives of the family dead, reports our staff correspondent in Chittagong.
The deceased were Tejendra Lal Dhar, 65, Babul Dhar, 55, Bidhu Dhar, 50, Mridul Dhar, 40, Parikkhit Dhar 52, and Jadu Dhar, 40, all hailing from Goirala village and microbus driver Shahidul Alam, 20.
Police and witnesses said the accident occurred when the microbus from Lohagara upazila collided head-on with a Cox's Bazar-bound truck in front of Shahchan Aulia Mazar Gate near Patiya Service Fire Station at about 4:00am.
Tejendra Lal, Babul, Bidhu and Shahidul died on the spot while Mridul, Parikkhit and Jadu succumbed to their injuries on the way to hospital.
The injured were rushed to the Chittagong Medical College Hospital (CMCH). The nine injured are Sanjoy Dhar, 30, Sadhan Sen, 35, Chandan Dhar, 34, Manu Dhar, 40, Ashim Dhar, 30, video man Md Didarul Islam, 20, Babu Das, 22, Bappu Das, 25, and Tutul Das, 16.
Of them, Sanjoy with critical condition was later shifted to a private clinic in the city.
