Bhasani's death anniversary today

Today is the 33rd death anniversary of Maulana Abdul Hamid Khan Bhasani, a veteran political leader.
BSS in Dhaka reports: President Zillur Rahman and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina yesterday expressed profound respect to the memory of late national leader Maulana Bhasani on the occasion of his death anniversary.
In separate messages, they prayed for eternal peace of Maulana Bhasani and recalled his struggle to realise the rights of the deprived and down trodden people.
The president, in his message, said Maulana Bhasani is a glittering star in the political history of the country. Bhasani fought throughout his life to establish the rights of the repressed people, he added.
The nation remembers with respect the contribution of Maulana Bhasani to all democratic movements, including the freedom struggle, the president said and hoped that his ideals would inspire the new generation with patriotism.
Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, in her message, said Maulana Bhasani was the advisory council member of the government of Bangladesh during the Liberation War and founding president of the then East Pakistan Awami Muslim League and National Awami Party (NAP).
Bhasani had struggled throughout his life for the exploited and repressed people, she added.
Maulana Bhasani was vocal against the repression of Pakistani colonial rule and played a significant role in the flourishing of Bangalee nationhood, she recalled.
The prime minister said Bhasani had ideological unity and political intimacy with the greatest Bangalee of all times Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman.
Different organisations chalked out elaborate programmes to mark the day.
Our correspondent in Tangail adds: To mark the day, Maulana Bhasani University of Science and Technology and different local organisations have organised various programmes at Santosh where he was buried. They will also place wreaths at his grave.
The programmes included milad mahfil, discussion, Bhasani fair, folk song, destitute feeding, blood donations and photo exhibition.
